Become A Volunteer
Volunteers play an integral role in our hospital’s ability to achieve its goal of providing the best in health care to our community. These individuals not only contribute personal and quality touches, but also bring professional skills as well, enhancing the care the hospital provides to its community every day.

Our Vision
We are an integral part of the organization and provide shockingly excellent service to our customers. We increase the human potential of the teams we serve and in turn are provided with satisfying volunteer experiences that offer opportunities for personal growth.
What is the commitment?
- 2 to 4 hours per week
- Minimum commitment of 75 hours
What do I need to become a Volunteer?
- Attend an information session.
- Complete an interview.
- Submit references, a clean police check, and complete a 2-step TB test (Police Check and TB test not to be completed until AFTER the interview).
- Attend a volunteer orientation session.
Why can't I just apply online?
Everyone who submits an application will be given an appointment for an interview. We feel that it is important that all interested volunteers have a true understanding of the commitment required to volunteer, the process involved in applying, and how volunteers fit into the hospital and Southlake Residential Care Village environments.
We offer information sessions twice a month to help you make an informed decision as to whether volunteering at Southlake is for you. Information packages, complete with application forms, are distributed at that time.
Where Can I Volunteer?
There are over 60 unique volunteer positions throughout the hospital and Southlake Residential Care Village. During the interview, Community Resources Staff will review your skills, abilities, and interests as well as the experience you would like to gain from volunteering in order to match you with the most suitable vacancy. Once you begin volunteering, you can job shadow other volunteer positions to learn more about Southlake Regional Health Centre or Southlake Residential Care Village.
- Patient Areas: Volunteers support patients and their families in most clinical departments at SRHC. Examples of patient care positions include: Emergency Department, Fracture Clinic, and Surgery.
- Non-patient Areas: Volunteers support the organization in a variety positions that are not directly related to patient care. Examples of non-patient volunteer roles include: Courtesy (Way-finding), Gift Shop Associate, Mail Delivery, and Laboratory Volunteer.
- St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program: If you have completed the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog Program with your dog and would like to visit with patients or residents at Southlake, please attend an information session. For more information about the program, please call 1-800-268-7581
- Southlake Residential Care Village: Volunteers at Southlake Residential Care Village visit one on one with the residents, help with activities such as Bingo and Movie Night, as well as share their personal interests with the residents (for example, music or crafts).
- Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation: Volunteers behinds the scenes also share their expertise in such areas as communication, event planning, fundraising, the arts, or leadership of special projects.
- Stronach Regional Cancer Centre: In partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), Volunteers will assist in a variety of areas in our outpatient cancer treatment facility and benefit from CCS specialized training to support their roles.
- Leadership Opportunities: For volunteers who would like to expand upon their leadership experience there are opportunities to become a Volunteer Information Session or Travelling Road Show Presenter, a Volunteer Trainer, and to represent the volunteer team on a variety of committees including the Volunteer Leaders’ Council or the Volunteer Trainer/Staff Liaison Committee. Some volunteers also utilize their skills and experience by working on specialized projects that support departments and services. Discussion with the Community Resources Department staff will help to identify opportunities and clarify expectations.
