  • General Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery

  • Dental and Oral Surgery
  • Urologic Surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology Surgery

Admission

On the day of your scheduled surgery, please report to the Same Day Admit/ Same Day Surgery area located on the first floor of the East Building.  You will be greeted and admitted by a member of the health care team.  In order to avoid any delays, please ensure that your Health Card is readily available.

Following admission, you will meet with a Registered Nurse who will that ensure you are prepared, both physically and emotionally, for your surgery.  Our primary goal is to ensure that you feel comfortable about your surgical experience; therefore, please do not hesitate to ask any questions that you may have.   You will also be asked to provide information on:

  • Medical history (including past surgical experiences)
  • Medications you are currently taking
  • Allergies (if any)
  • Special needs (for example, hearing aids, etc.)

Recovery

Following your surgery, you will recover in an area known as the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) or Recovery Room.  Registered Nurses with specialized training in post-anesthetic care will ensure that you recover safely and provide you with comfort and support.

Each patient's response to recovery is varied.  Your nurse will continuously monitor your condition and determine when you are ready for transfer to either an inpatient surgical unit or to the post-operative area.

If you do require admission to an inpatient surgical unit following your surgery, please visit the Surgical Unit section for more information.

Day Surgery

Some routine surgical operations require only a short recovery period.  These procedures are referred to as same day surgeries and result in the patient being transferred to the post-operative area for a few hours before being discharged home.  Your family will be invited to sit with you while you rest. Members of the health care team will provide information to assist you in your recovery once you are at home.  At this time you will also be informed of a follow-up appointment with your surgeon and given medication prescriptions and special instructions as required.

Our goal is to make your surgical experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible for you and your family.
