Admission

On the day of your scheduled surgery, please check in on the Kiosk or report to the Welcome Center  located on Level 1 of the East Building.  In order to avoid any delays, please ensure that your Health Card is readily available.

After checking in you will be directed to Level 2 of the East building to the Surgical Admissions Department. You will be greeted  by a member of the health care team.

At admission, you will meet with a Nurse who will  ensure you are prepared, both physically and emotionally, for your surgery.  Our primary goal is to ensure that you feel comfortable about your surgical experience; therefore, please do not hesitate to ask any questions that you may have.   You will also be asked to provide information on:

  • Medical history (including past surgical experiences)
  • Medications you are currently taking, including dosage and frequency
  • Allergies
  • Special needs (for example, hearing aids, etc.)

For your safety, all Day Surgery patients are not permitted to drive home and must have someone available to stay with them overnight after receiving anaesthetic.

Recovery

Following your surgery, you will recover in an area known as the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) or Recovery Room.  Registered Nurses with specialized training in post-anaesthesia care will ensure that you recover safely and provide you with comfort and support.

Each patient's response to recovery is varied.  Your nurse will continuously monitor your condition and determine when you are ready for transfer to either an inpatient surgical unit or to the post-operative area.

If you do require admission to an inpatient surgical unit following your surgery, please visit the Surgical Unit section for more information.

Day Surgery

Some routine surgical operations require only a short recovery period.  These procedures result in the patient being transferred to the surgical day care area before being discharged home.  Your family will be invited to sit with you while you receive  instruction. Members of the health care team will provide information to assist you in your recovery once you are at home.  At this time you will also be informed of a follow-up appointment with your surgeon and given medication prescriptions or special instructions as required.

Our goal is to make your surgical experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible for you and your family.
