New program at Southlake Regional is changing lives
Newmarket, Ontario - In just over four months
of operation, Southlake Regional's new Respiratory Rehabilitation
Program has helped improve the quality of life for its patients
who suffer from Chronic Lung Diseases (CLD), such as emphasema,
chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectesis, and pulmonary fibrosis.
Joe Schutter, a Sharon resident, suffers from Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease (COPD), in his case, a combination of emphysema
and chronic bronchitis. Prior to his enrollment in the program,
Mr. Schutter was often admitted to the hospital for flare-ups in
his condition. As a recent graduate of the six-week rehabilitation
program, he has now been without hospital admission for over two
months.
"Because I have more control over my breathing, I don't feel
as afraid to be active. This program's really changed the way I
live my life," said Mr. Schutter.
Through a combination of education and exercise, the program is
designed to meet four objectives: teach participants to self-manage
their condition, increase participants' quality of life, improve
participants' confidence with regard to exercise and activity, and
decrease the need for hospitalization.
"One of the greatest benefits to the participant is the support
network they develop with classmates and staff," stated Dr.
Ken Roberts, Respirologist and Physician Leader for the Program.
Dr. Roberts also says that although exercise is so important for
Chronic Lung Disease sufferers, they often refrain from activity
and become deconditioned because they are afraid of becoming short
of breath.
The Respiratory Rehabilitation Program is a six-week, outpatient
program that is located in the Tannery Mall. Physician referrals
are accepted. For more information about the program, please call
