New Web Site Helps Guide Patients After Cancer Diagnosis
Newmarket, Ontario – July 16, 2010 – The doctor enters the room and says the six letter word that will forever change a person’s life: cancer. For someone who has just received a cancer diagnosis, making sense of the statistics, outcomes and information that follow can be overwhelming.
That’s why the new Stronach Regional Cancer Centre has launched a unique web site to support residents of York Region and south Simcoe County living with cancer. By visiting www.southlakeregional.org/cancer, users gain instant access to information regarding their illness and the resources available to help them.
“The Stronach Regional Cancer Centre is expected to experience 100,000 patient visits in the first year alone, a figure that equates to a high number of patients who need information at their fingertips about their diagnosis, what to expect and who they will meet during their treatment journey,” said Dr. Louis Balogh, Vice President, Regional Cancer Program at Southlake and Regional Vice President, Cancer Care Ontario.
“As a regional centre for delivering comprehensive cancer care services, we have an obligation to ensure that Southlake patients, their families and friends can access information that is directly relevant to them when they need it,” Dr. Balogh said. “We know that receiving a cancer diagnosis is never easy, and having to overcome that initial shock and be able to really hear what the doctor is saying is almost impossible.”
The new web site provides details such as treatment and service options, profiles on the centre’s cancer care team, support resources for patients and their families, maps and directions, a feedback page to provide comments or suggestions, and a glossary of cancer-related terms.
The Stronach Regional Cancer Centre– the centerpiece of Newmarket-based Southlake’s $110 million Regional Cancer Program – will serve more than 1.2 million local residents.
The designated radiation treatment site for York Region and south Simcoe County, it also offers world-class chemotherapy and supportive care. With the opening of the centre, residents can now access radiation therapy closer to home, as opposed to having to travel to Toronto to receive treatment.
The Stronach Regional Cancer Centre web site can be accessed at www.southlakeregional.org/cancer.
