York County Hospital introduces a new approach to inpatient
care
(Newmarket, Ontario - April 28, 2000) York County
Hospital has developed a new approach to inpatient care with the
introduction of its new inpatient unit for patients with musculoskeletal
conditions. As part of a full continuum of services within
the Musculoskeletal Program this new inpatient unit incorporates
acute care and inpatient rehabilitation on one floor, thereby eliminating
unnecessary patient transfers within the hospital. The patient
benefits from a consistent team of caregivers who specialize in
their condition.
"The MSK Program brings together some of our most strongly developed
programs in arthritis, orthopaedics and plastics and will work to
create better linkages between inpatient, outpatient and community
follow-up for our clients," stated Barb Kendrick, Manager of Progressive
Care and Musculoskeletal Programs.
She adds, "We saw a unique opportunity to become more patient-focused
by integrating the medical, surgical and rehabilitation services
for patients with musculoskeletal conditions in one physical location
and coordinating their inpatient and outpatient care."
Prior to the development of the MSK program, patients with musculoskeletal
conditions received acute treatment in the surgery or medicine units
and were then transferred to either the hospital's rehabilitation
unit or to a Metro Toronto rehabilitation facility depending on
the individual patient's needs.
Bob Baynham, Senior Vice President said, "We're confident patients
will see this as an improvement in our service." He added,
" Staff is to be commended on working very hard to prepare for this
change."
The new MSK inpatient unit is located on the fourth floor of the
East building and currently has 34 beds dedicated to patients with
musculoskeletal conditions.
