Town Waives or Reduces Fees To Grant
York County Hospital a Million
Dollars
Newmarket, -- April 7, 2000 - The Town of Newmarket
Council has waived or reduced fees to grant York County Hospital
a million dollars. The reduction of development and building
fees is in support of York County Hospital's expansion project,
Redevelopment 2002. As a result of these deductions, the savings
to the York County Hospital over the next few years will total just
under a million dollars. The Municipal Solicitor is currently preparing
a grant agreement between York County Hospital and the Town of Newmarket
that will outline the terms and conditions upon which the grants
will be made.
Council approved the grants because hospital expansion is essential
to meeting the health care needs of this growing community. Redevelopment
2002 will include the construction of a new six-story building and
extensive renovations to existing buildings in order to expand and
completely modernize the hospital's patient care areas. The benefit
to the community will be improved access to specialized services
and state-of-the-art procedures closer to home.
"We are delighted with the town's response to our situation," stated
Bob Baynham, Senior Vice-President, York County Hospital. "By eliminating
the levies and fees, the town has enabled us to put this money toward
patient care," he adds.
"In the spirit of good will and community, we are very pleased
to be able to support York County Hospital in this regard," said
Mayor Tom Taylor. "It would ultimately benefit the hospital and
patient care if the other communities served by this hospital were
to consider a grant also," added Mayor Tom Taylor.
Incorporated in 1880, the Town of Newmarket is located
in the Region of York, 55 kilometers north of Toronto. It
has a population of 68,000 and employs 220 staff.
York County Hospital is a fully accredited, 283-bed
community hospital serving a population of approximately 182,000
people who reside in northern York region, southeastern Simcoe County
and northwestern Durham region.
