Southlake Participates in 2009 Earth Hour
Newmarket, March 27, 2009 – Southlake Regional Health Centre will join communities around the world on Saturday, March 28, 2009 in turning off the lights for this year’s Earth Hour. Earth Hour, held on the last Saturday of March each year, is an international event organized by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF). This important global initiative asks all households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards taking action on climate change.
“At Southlake, we play an important role in our community, both as a large facility and in the services that we provide, which can have a significant impact on our environment and our ecological foot print,” said President and CEO, Dan Carriere. “We want to try and eliminate as many non-essential lights and electrical appliances as we can for Earth Hour. In fact, we will be reducing our energy for the majority of the day.
Southlake will reduce 50 per cent of its power on Saturday, March 28, 2009 during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. As well, the lights that illuminate the archway on Southlake infamous “Skywalk” (Southlake Bridge) will be turned off for the entire night.
Thousands of organizations around the world, including Southlake, have signed up to participate in the 2009 Earth Hour movement. The support will help to increase public awareness of the need for significant energy-use reduction and to take action on climate change by turning lights off for one hour on March 28, 2009 from 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm.
