Medicine
Southlake's Medicine Program offers both in-patient
and out-patient services. They include:
In-Patient Units
Diabetes Education
Respiratory Rehabilitation Program
In-Patient
Units
The Medicine Program has two in-patient units. Totalling 66 beds,
the units are supported by a team of health care professionals who
provide individualized care that includes regular interaction with
family members and loved ones. The team's goal is to assist each
patient with their recovery and to ensure their smooth transition
home or to more suitable accommodations in the community.
The 38-bed general medicine unit focuses on diagnosing and caring
for patients with respiratory, gastroenterology (digestive system)
and endocrinology (internal glands, e.g., pancreas) conditions.
Registered nurses and registered practical nurses, with expertise
in general medicine care, support this area.
The 28-bed general medicine unit is designed for patients with
neurological disorders, such as strokes. A highly specialized team
cares for these patients during the acute or immediate phase following
their stroke (generally 3-7 days).
Meet the In-Patient Medicine Health Care
Team
Our health care team consists of internists/physicians, registered
nurses, registered practical nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, physiotherapists,
occupational therapists, a discharge planner/social worker, a respiratory
therapist, a speech language pathologist, a chaplain, unit clerks,
service assistants and volunteers. Each member has a specific role
to play, but together, they strive to provide health care excellence
to each patient and family.
In order to support our team in their commitment to this high level
of care, we make every effort to provide them with educational and
training opportunities to enhance their expertise. One such opportunity
is an eight week respiratory course designed for staff through the
joint efforts of Southlake Regional, York Central Hospital, Markham
Stouffville Hospital and Seneca College.
