Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

While we certainly hope that every baby born in our Hospital is healthy and happy, we know that there are babies born who require a higher level of care. We understand that compassion and exceptional care for these babies and their families is essential.

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has the medical expertise, technology, and state-of-the-art equipment to provide the level of support these babies and their families require.  As a Regional Level 2 nursery, our highly trained nursing staff and physicians are able to stabilize and care for high-risk babies (32 + weeks gestation). Babies born before their expected date and babies who are born requiring assistance with their breathing and nutrition are most often referred to the NICU for a brief period of time.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team is comprised of Neonatologists, Pediatricians, Registered Nurses with additional education and experience in caring for neonates, Reparatory Therapists, Dieticians, Physiotherapists, Social Worker, Diagnostic Imaging and Pharmacists. A dedicated team of volunteers also lend support to the new families and nursing staff.

To offer continued support to parents with babies in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, courtesy accommodation is available for mothers whose babies must remain in the NICU after mom is ready for discharge.

Many members of the community kindly donate knitted and handmade clothing to help make our littlest patients warm and comfortable.

It is very common for “graduates” to return to the NICU to see the nurses on their birthdays or at Christmas. Children as old as 10 and 11 years have returned to visit the Unit. This provides a great sense of satisfaction for the staff who played a part in getting them off to a good start.
