Hospital Gala raised $1.4 million – highest net beyond Toronto
Another Canadian-first for Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket with the announcement of the highest net revenues from any hospital Gala beyond Toronto.
A record-breaking $1.4 million net was raised at Southlake’s 2007 Viva Las Vegas Gala on October 13, 2007 to help build the Regional Cancer Program at Southlake, desperately needed by the more than one million people living in York Region and South Simcoe county. The Gala is held every two years.
Southlake’s Gala is unique in yet another way: It is largely volunteer-driven and has a large group of influential and dedicated volunteers, under the leadership of Chair, Dawn Beswick, who invested eighteen months of effort to make the 2007 Gala such a success. They, together with the very generous sponsors and supporters, created an outstanding evening for all the guests.
Reminiscent of a Las Vegas lounge, 1200 Gala guests enjoyed a lavish cocktail reception, showtime featuring the Rat Pack, a fabulous dinner, tried their luck to win great prizes including a Tiffany 16 ½ inch 4.84 carat diamond double drop necklace that retails for $30,000, bid on wonderful items in the exciting silent and live auctions and danced the night away.
The word about Southlake is getting out and prominent Canadian individuals and organizations are showing their support. In addition to major sponsors such Magna International, Rogers Communications, and State Farm Insurance, new partners such as Tiffany & Co. and Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) demonstrated their support to Southlake’s Gala this year by donating a $30,000 Tiffany necklace and a $44,000 Ford Edge, respectively. Tiffany & Co. Vice President, Andrea Hopson and CAW National President, Buzz Hargrove both attended this year’s Gala which was emceed by another prominent Canadian, CBC host Wendy Mesley.
The Regional Cancer Program at Southlake will be a welcome relief to the 200 local residents who are forced to travel daily to Toronto hospitals for life-saving radiation treatment, often for 5-6 weeks. Once built, residents of this region will have access to a comprehensive range of cancer services including cutting-edge screening and diagnostic programs designed to detect cancer early and expedite treatment; advanced treatment including gold-standard radiation therapy which targets tumours and minimizes damage to surrounding tissue; and far greater capacity for the anticipated increases in cancer patient volumes.
