Regional Cancer Program

Site Location of the Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake

Cancer. Few other words have the power to leave people quite so shaken, frightened, and angry. It's no wonder why. Almost one out of every two family members, friends, and neighbours living in Ontario will receive a cancer diagnosis during his or her lifetime. You or those you care for may even be among the more than 3,300 new cases expected to be diagnosed in York Region this year- an increase of 32% over only seven years. When cancer strikes, we all want and deserve the best possible care for those we love.

By 2010, thousands of cancer patients from York Region and south Simcoe County will have access to one of Canada’s most advanced cancer care teams at the Regional Cancer Program at Southlake.  One of only 13 programs in Ontario designated by the provincial government to provide radiation treatment, the Regional Cancer Program will promise Southlake patients a level of care equal to or exceeding that provided at any cancer program in Canada.  We don’t make that promise lightly.  The Regional Cancer Program is being developed in partnership with Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.  For Southlake patients, that means access to the most advanced treatments and the latest discoveries. As soon as these become available.

The need for comprehensive cancer care close to home is urgent – by 2012, the Regional Cancer Program must accommodate 100,000 cancer patient visits, a six-fold increase from the total visits today and will feature inpatient and outpatient services across the Southlake campus including:

  • The newest screening and diagnostic equipment, designed to more accurately detect cancer at its earliest stage.
  • Expedited diagnosis and treatment, recognizing the critical importance of early intervention for successful treatment outcomes and reducing the stress and anxiety of prolonged waits.
  • The latest treatments that are less invasive and more effective.
  • A full range of support services to address the mental well-being of patients and family.
  • Radiation treatment, available for the first time in this region.
