Diabetes Education
The Diabetes Education Clinic (DEC) provides assessment and education for adults with Type 1, Type 2, Gestational Diabetes, and Prediabetes.
The DEC strives to help adults:
- Improve their knowledge about the cause, progression and treatment of diabetes.
- Understand how to use medications correctly.
- Learn strategies for coping with and self-managing their diabetes.
Each program consists of three components – assessment, education and follow-up.
Participants with diabetes learn how to prevent or delay long term complications. Following a two hour assessment by a Diabetes Nurse Educator and a Registered Dietitian, participants attend education sessions to assist with diabetes self management. Topics include, exercise, nutrition, meal planning, medications, smoking cessations, and foot care. 30 – 45 minutes follow-up appointments provide information and answer questions as required.
