Southlake offers a
state-of–the-art Digital Mammography x-ray procedure which has been proven to be effective at diagnosing abnormalities in dense breast tissue, often
when abnormalities are still too small to be felt. The technologist will explain the procedure,
review the medical history and answer any questions. Each breast will be compressed for only a few
seconds. This should not be painful,
although it can be uncomfortable.
Compression is extremely important as it provides a clearer image of the
breast by separating the tissue and also reduces radiation exposure.
The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.
The Mammography Department is accredited by the
Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) and offers screening and diagnostic mammograms as well as the Ontario Breast Screening Program.
Mammography is the best screening test for most women
as it plays an important role in early detection of breast cancers. Women can receive a screening Mammogram in
one of two ways:

Practitioner (i.e. Family doctor)

Breast Screening Program (OBSP)
Diagnostic Mammography is used to evaluate a patient
with abnormal clinical findings that have been found by the patient or their Primary
Ontario Breast Screen Program
Women automatically become part of the Ontario Breast Screen Program (OBSP) when they
are referred for a mammogram provided they:
- Are 50 years of age and older
- Have not had previous breast cancer
- Do not have breast implants
- Are not experiencing acute breast
- Have not had a mammogram within the
- Are a current resident of Ontario
The OBSP offers important advantages for women and
their primary care practitioners by sending recall and result letters to women,
and arranging follow-up services for women if further tests are required. Women who are screened for breast cancer
within an organized screening program like the OBSP further benefit by
participating in a program that undergoes ongoing quality assurance, program
monitoring, and evaluation to ensure that its clients receive high quality
