Can Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills be effective in managing symptoms associated with bipolar disorder?
Research Summary of Key Projects:
During a 12 week group session, Sheri Van Dijk's research focus was to teach a group of 12 patients, who all had a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, how to effectively manage their symptoms through DBT. Patients had to complete a pre and post test questionnaire, which Sheri later compared to a wait-list control group. Between the two groups, there were statistically significant differences in terms of patients with symptoms and those without. Individuals who completed the 12 week group sessions experienced a reduction in symptoms of depression, were able to better control and manage their emotions as well as have a better handle on their beliefs and feelings of self-efficacy.
As a DBT therapist, Sheri was interested in how helpful DBT skills are in helping clients manage their symptoms of bipolar disorder. Since there was no previous research or trials in this area, she wanted to conduct research to ensure quality assurance for Southlake's Brief Therapy Clinic.
