The Specialized Oncology Nurses who work in the Cancer Centre

The Registered Nurses (RN) who work at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre are considered Specialized Oncology Nurses. They have a combination of additional education focused on cancer care and at least 2 years of experience working in a setting where the primary focus is delivering cancer care. They use their enhanced specialty knowledge and skills to manage the symptoms of cancer and the side-effects of cancer treatment, counsel patients in coping strategies, teach self-care behaviours, and monitor the responses to treatment and nursing interventions. (CANO, 2012)

The Specialized Oncology Nurse might acquire specialty education through a variety of means, including:

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate nursing program
  • Completion of an Oncology Certificate Program
  • Distance specialty education (such as offered in Adult and Pediatric Oncology Nursing)
  • Completion of the certification exam offered by the Canadian Nurses Association

The RNs that work in the Centre achieve their Canadian Oncology certificate and atttain the distinction “CON(C).” The Canadian Nurses Association recognizes this specialization as the highest academic achievement for oncology nurses.  The Centre's Chemotherapy nurses have also successfully completed their specialty in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration.

The Specialized Oncology Nurses work in specialized settings, such as:

  • an oncology unit
  • an ambulatory setting focused on the delivery of cancer care
  • a screening program
  • in a supportive care setting
  • community setting offering palliative care
