Job Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for educational programming for the Medicine Program, in collaboration with other Educators in the various departments at Southlake.  The Clinical Nurse Educator promotes excellence within the Medicine Program through coaching and mentoring of staff; develops, provides and evaluates educational programs including orientation; oversees skill certification, continuing education and professional development; and supports research activities within the program/organization.

The educator supports the acceptance of students within the program, liaising with professional practice.  The Clinical Nurse Educator acts as a consultant to the team regarding nursing practice issues and functions as a role model and clinical resource. The educator implements education, based on relevant quality and evidence-based practices driven by the interpretation and evaluation of continuous quality improvement indicators. She/he leads or participates in specific projects as requested, including quality of care reviews and the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Areas of responsibility may change according to the needs of the Medicine program. This role intersects with multiple health disciplines and collaborates with other Clinical Nurse Educators across the organization for corporate orientation and corporate initiatives. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and educational support to staff related to performance issues, identify learning needs, develops individualized professional development plans as required
  • Assesses nursing competencies and provides just-in-time education including in-servicing following adult learning principles
  • Participates in program quality improvement initiatives and establishes educational strategies in response to emerging changes
  • Monitor nursing  and interprofessional trends/issues and collaborates to integrate relevant information into education activities
  • Participates with other clinical educators and professional practice in development and delivery of corporate clinical education programs
  • Supports the development of evidenced based policies and procedures and ensures practice according to policies, procedures and standard of care
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocol, procedures, and standards within different areas of nursing expertise
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Advanced nursing, experience in different clinical environments
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


  • Registered Nurse with a BScN
  • Masters Degree in a health related discipline, or working toward completion of Masters degree, preferred
  • Registered with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Canadian Nurses Association Certification preferred
  • Minimum of five years recent, relevant clinical and educational experience is required.
  • CC1/CC2 preferred
  • Formal training or experience in Adult Education considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical educational leadership and mentoring to staff
  • Current/previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Educator in a health care organization preferred
  • Additional course work, workshops and experience in principles and methodologies of adult education preferred
  • Experience facilitating learning from an evidence-based best practice perspective preferred
  • Experience in quality improvement methodologies and participation in research preferred
  • Commitment to customer service and teamwork
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly as per the Attendance Support Policy #HA30 and Procedure #HA35.
