Southlake celebrates the first patient to make use of newly installed MRI

Thank you to our donors and our community for helping to accommodate more complex patients, making earlier diagnosis possible and providing better outcomes for patients.

Newmarket, Ontario – April 3, 2018 – The arrival of the second permanent magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) at Southlake Regional Health Centre in February was cause for excitement, both at the hospital and in the community. Today, the excitement continues with the first patient making use of this newly installed, state-of-the-art technology.

The installation of the 3 Tesla MRI Siemens MAGNETOM Vida is the first of its kind in Ontario. This MRI was part of the third and final phase of the Images for Life Campaign to expand and upgrade diagnostic imaging services at Southlake, with the goal of bringing world-class diagnostic imaging technology close to home. This equipment will have an incredible impact on patients in our community.

This advanced technology means that we can accommodate patients with more complex conditions, and more precise scans means identifying health issues faster so patients can get more timely treatments and better outcomes. There is also an improved patient experience because the machine is wider and more comfortable which really helps patients who feel anxious and claustrophobic.

Arden Krystal, President and CEO says, “I’m thrilled to see this new MRI delivered and to see that it’s up and running! This will mean Southlake patients will be getting the most advanced care and this is a welcome relief for our staff who have been making due with a temporary MRI trailer in our parking lot. A big thank you to our donors and our community for supporting the hospital to provide this level of care.”

“To see the first patient come through is really exciting for us,” says Susan Mullin, President and CEO of Southlake Foundation. “This has been a long time coming, and our community should be very proud of the fact that they have made this possible. Thanks to their support of the Images for Life Campaign, patients with complex issues now have access to this technology close to home, when they need it.”

In addition to the second permanent MRI, community support of the Images for Life Campaign has also supported the opening of our Interventional Radiology Suite, upgrades to X-ray suites to provide faster diagnostic results in our emergency department, purchase of digital portable X-ray units to enable us to do scans at the bedside, two new ultrasound units to provide better access for our patients, a new MRI monitoring system to increase patient safety, and the replacement and upgrades of older diagnostic equipment.
