Dr. Louis Balogh is Vice President, Regional Cardiac, Cancer, and Thoracic Surgery Programs at Southlake Regional Health Centre. With more than 30 years of his career devoted to the Hospital, Dr. Balogh joined Southlake (then York County Hospital) as a full time physician member in the Department of Paediatrics in July 1980.

Over the years, Dr. Balogh has been actively involved in a broad spectrum of administrative functions at Southlake. His positions have included: President of Medical Staff , Chief of Staff and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee, Member of the Board of Directors, and Vice President of Southlake’s Medicine Program, Surgery Program, Ambulatory Clinics, Risk Management, and currently the Regional Cardiac, Cancer, Surgical and Medical Programs. He was an active participant in launching the Regional Cancer Program in the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), hosted by Southlake, in 2009. For the period of January to July 2011, Dr. Balogh held the position of Interim President and CEO at the Hospital until the position was filled on a permanent basis by Dr. Dave Williams.

Dr. Balogh graduated with an M.D. from the University of Western Ontario in 1972. He then went on to complete his internship and paediatric residency at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton. In 1978, Dr. Balogh earned his Fellowship in Paediatrics with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. From 1977 to 1980, he was on staff as a full-time paediatrician at the Children’s Psychiatric Research Institute in London, Ontario, and Clinical Lecturer at the University of Western Ontario Medical School.

In addition to his numerous responsibilities at Southlake, Dr. Balogh is also involved provincially in various capacities within the healthcare system. He is the Regional Vice President of Cancer Care Ontario and Chair of the Regional Cancer Program Steering Committee in the Central LHIN. Dr. Balogh is also Southlake’s representative in the Central LHIN Wait Time Strategic Planning Group. Previous associations include: Chair of the Ontario Hospital Association’s (OHA) Medical Devices Committee on Reprocessing of Single-Use Devices, member of the Board of Directors of the OHA from 2003 to 2005, and the OHA representative on the Ontario’s College of Physicians and Surgeons Committee on Disruptive Physician Behaviour.

Dr. Balogh’s strong commitment to the community is reflected in his past involvement in several community non-profit agencies, including the District Health Council (predecessor of LHINs), the Board of Directors of York Region Children’s Aid Society, and as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Blue Hills Child and Family Services in Aurora. During his tenure at Southlake, Dr. Balogh has participated as member or Chair of numerous committees dealing with almost every aspect of the Hospital’s programs.

In 1980, he moved to Newmarket where he established a consultancy focused on developmental paediatrics. Soon after, he joined York County Hospital (now Southlake Regional Health Centre) as a full-time staff member in the Department of Paediatrics where he is currently an active participant. Since 2004, Dr. Balogh has held several notable appointments as Vice President of Southlake’s Regional Cardiac, Cancer, and Surgical Programs, Ambulatory Surgical Clinics, and Risk Management. Actively engaged in preparations to get Southlake’s Cancer Program launched in 2009, Dr. Balogh is currently the Regional Vice President of Cancer Care Ontario and Chair of the Central LHIN Regional Cancer Steering Committee. In addition to all of the above appointments, he is Southlake’s representative in the Central LHIN Wait Time Strategic Planning Group, and Chair of the OHA’s Medical Devices Committee on Reprocessing of Single-Use Devices.

From 1972 to 2004, Dr. Balogh was involved in a broad spectrum of administrative functions at Southlake as Chief of Staff and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee, Member of the Board of Directors, and Vice President for the Surgical and Medical Programs. In 2003, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Ontario Hospital Association until his resignation in November 2005. He has also acted as representative on the Ontario’s College of Physicians and Surgeons Committee on Disruptive Physician Behaviour.
