While the cost of most healthcare services are covered for patients with a valid Health Card, some services are not covered. Patients who are not Canadian residents must pay for all services that they receive while in the Hospital.
More information on Health Cards, billing for services not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and billing for non-Canadian residents is provided below.
Your Ontario Health Insurance Plan Card is a very important piece of your personal information which should be carried with you at all times.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) states that healthcare providers, such as hospitals, will not be reimbursed for certain non-emergency procedures if the patient is not able to provide a valid Health Card number. As such, patients who provide an invalid Health Card, or who are not able to produce one at the time of their visit, will be charged by Southlake for services that the MOHLTC will not cover. However, patients who forget to bring their Health Card will have 24 hours to contact and provide the Hospital with their valid Health Card number before charges will be billed.
All Canadian Residents
The MOHLTC and the Canada Health Act dictate that any individual who receives medical care but cannot show proof of valid Ontario Health Insurance Plan coverage can be personally billed for both hospital and physician services provided.
If you present your valid Health Card number to Southalke's Financial Services Department within 24 hours of your visit, you will not be billed for non-physician services.
Physicians bill separately for their services and may request immediate payment at the time of your visit. If this is the case, you will be given a receipt and may use it to receive reimbursement from the provincial Health Insurance Program.

Billing for Services Not Covered by OHIP
As a convenient way for patients to pay for uninsured services or items (i.e. crutches, splints, etc.) which are incurred in the Emergency Department, Southlake accepts credit card payment at the Registration desk in the Emergency Department.
For patients in all other areas of the Hospital, payment for uninsured services and personal accounts is due upon discharge and may be settled at the cashier's counter, East Building, Level 1.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
An after-hour depository is located next to the Cashier's counter. Payments can also be made online
Payment may be made by cash, cheque, Visa, MasterCard or debit card. A banking machine is located near the entrance doors of the East Building, near the Hospital's Aquene Cafe, and on Level 1 of the Medical Arts Building.

Billing for Non-residents of Canada
All non-residents of Canada must pay for services received at Southlake. In-patients are required to pay a deposit (to be arranged with Finance Services) and sign a guarantee of payment for the balance of their account.
