Simcoe County gives $301,455 in support of cancer care services at Southlake

Simcoe County Deputy Warden delivers final instalment of 10-year $2.7 million commitment to support radiation treatment at Southlake

June 20, 2017, Newmarket, ON – Simcoe County Deputy Warden, Terry Dowdall, today delivered the final instalment of a 10-year commitment to support radiation treatment services at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

The $301,455 is part of a $2.7 million investment that Simcoe County has made in Southlake over the past 10 years to support the expansion of radiation treatment at the hospital, which included the addition of a fourth radiation treatment unit. The addition of this unit has allowed the centre to treat more than 400 additional cancer patients each year, giving more patients access to world-class care closer to home.

This investment is part of a $30 million commitment Simcoe County has made to the Simcoe County Hospital Alliance in support of capital development at the hospitals that serve County residents.

In addition to Southlake, Alliance members include:

  • Collingwood General and Marine Hospital
  • Georgian Bay General Hospital
  • Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital
  • Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre
  • Stevenson Memorial Hospital
  • Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care

The Simcoe County Hospital Alliance was established in 2002 to advise the County of ongoing hospital capital needs. It is comprised of CEOs of all hospitals located in Simcoe County, as well as Southlake, and aims to ensure equitable distribution of available funding from the County to Alliance hospitals.

Since 1994 the County has provided $62.2 million to these hospitals, and this past April County Council approved a new $45 million commitment over the next 15 years.

Quotes

We very much appreciate the leadership of County Council demonstrated through their support of capital projects at Alliance hospitals. The expansion of radiation treatment here at Southlake helps to ensure that Simcoe County patients can access much-needed treatment closer to home.

- Dr. Dave Williams, President and CEO, Southlake Regional Health Centre

This contribution closes out our 10-year $30 million funding commitment to the Simcoe County Hospital Alliance, however we are pleased to announce a renewed 15-year $45 million commitment towards our area hospitals that will carry us to 2031.

As a Council, we know how important these funds are to our hospitals, their staff and the communities they serve. We have supported many projects at Southlake during the past 10 years and we are so pleased that these funds helped fit out a new radiation treatment unit that will serve 400 additional patients each year.

- Gerry Marshall, Warden, County of Simcoe
