Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome
Patient’s have elevations in their heart rate upon standing leading to palpitations, light-headedness, exercise intolerance, chest pain and shortness of breath. Symptoms may be exacerbated by prolonged sitting or lying, alcohol, heat, exercise or consumption of a large meal. Blood pressure is not typically affected. The cause of POTS is poorly understood but it is believed to be a result of dysfunctional blood vessels in your body, leading to the inability of the vessels to constrict (shrink) with changes in position. Your health care provider may ask you to keep hydrated and increase the amount of salt consumed each day to increase the volume in your body and prevent symptoms.
