Coronary Syndrome X

Coronary Syndrome X
Patients with this condition are typically women who report chest discomfort with exertion. Exercise stress tests reveal abnormalities on the ECG indicative of decreased blood and oxygen to the heart. Angiograms show no blockages responsible for the patient’s chest pain. This condition remains poorly understood but is believed to be a result of impairment in the small vessels of the heart to adapt to situations where there is an increased demand for blood and oxygen, such as during exercise. These small vessels are not visible on angiogram. It is also believed to be related to impairment in pain stimuli within the central nervous system.
