Cardioversion is a minor procedure performed to correct abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. During a cardioversion, medications are given to put the patient asleep for a few minutes in order for an electrical shock to be delivered, using special electrical paddles, through the chest wall to the heart. This interrupts the abnormal heart rhythm and should restore the normal one.
