Aerobic Exercise and Exercise Testing

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

What are the benefits of aerobic exercise?

  • Increases your fitness level
  • Increases heart’s efficiency in pumping blood
  • Lowers resting heart rate
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Helps control blood sugar
  • Increases energy for regular daily activities
  • Increases ability to cope with stress
  • Improves mood
  • Helps to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight

What happens when I exercise?

  • Your heart rate and systolic blood pressure increase along with your breathing rate and depth. Your body temperature and blood flow increase and your blood sugar levels decrease.

How do I improve my fitness?

Frequency: aim for five days per week

Intensity: moderate to vigorous intensity, within the training heart range set by your exercise therapist.

Type: using large muscle groups of the body - walking, cycling, swimming

Time: ultimate goal to increase up to 60 miniutes of continuous exercise

How is cardiovascular fitness determined?

• An exercise stress test determines your fitness level and shows how your body responds to exercise.

• This test tells us how your heart responds to increased physical demands and lets us look for rhythm changes that may happen during exercise.

• Stress tests performed in your physician’s office are for the purpose of diagnosing a new or existing condition and do not focus on fitness assessment.

At Southlake, the program performs Cardiopulmonary Exercise testing CPET

Understanding your fitness level: MET

• MET stands for metabolic equivalents.

• This is the amount of effort needed to do exercise.

Your MET level is an indicator of your aerobic fitness level (MET Levels Chart)

• We check this at the start and end of the program. Ask us how yours has improved when you graduate

Does fitness really matter?

  • A higher fitness level is linked to a lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular event.

  • While your doctors work to optimize your medications, cardiovascular rehabilitation focuses on exercise therapy to help you optimize your fitness level.
