Over the past 25 years, the Southlake Regional Health Centre (Southlake) grew from a small community hospital into a major regional cardiac and cancer centre. This growth occurred when the municipality of Newmarket lost numerous auto sector manufacturing jobs, and health care supplanted manufacturing as the predominant economic driver. This situation influenced the development of Southlake's strategic plan, Transforming Healthcare, in 2013.
The plan identified three pillars: innovation, shockingly excellent patient experiences, and partnerships. At the heart of the new innovation agenda was the ground-breaking concept of using Southlake's facilities and expertise as a platform for the development, testing, and implementation of a range of new health technologies with strong commercial potential; these technologies also advanced the hospital's commitment to a high standard of quality care for patients.
