In-Patient Units

The Medicine Program has seven in-patient units, totaling 176 beds, representing 46% of the beds at the hospital. The units are supported by a team of healthcare professionals who provide individualized care which includes regular interaction with family members and loved ones. The team’s goal is to assist each patient with their recovery and to ensure their smooth transition home or to more suitable accommodations in the community.

 

Medical Assessment and Consultation Unit (MACU)

 

MACU is a designated 24/7 hospital unit which is staffed with a dedicated multidisciplinary team who has a defined process to receive medical inpatients admitted by the Emergency Department physicians. Medical patients receive ingoing assessments, care, treatment and planning for a period no great than 48 hours resulting in either discharge home or transfer to an inpatient unit.

 

The unit is supported by a dedicated Internist, focused on early assessment and streamlined care processes resulting in a reduced length of stay and enhanced patient flow through the Emergency Department. Exclusion criteria include patient who present with acute symptoms requiring critical care and/or specialized care areas, such as Neurology or Mental Health units.

 

MACU is located on the 3rd Floor of the East Building

 

Medical Complex Care (MCC)

 

MCC consists of 23 beds servicing those with medical conditions requiring 24 hour car, patients who are palliating and those rehabilitating following hospitalization.

 

The goal of care is to optimize patient function through exercise and equipment prescription to promote independence while assisting with transitions to the community.

 

The unit is supported by a team of healthcare professionals who together coordinate to provide individuals care for our patients based on their treatment goals. It includes physicians, nursing staff, unit clerk, nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, dietician, social worker, volunteers and hospital service assistant.
MCC is locared on the 3rd Floor of the East Building.

 

Rehab and Neurological Unit (RNU)

 

Central Medicine 6 (MED)

 

Cancer Care/Palliative Care (CAN/PCC)

 

While Cancer Care does admit patients with medical conditions its main focus is towards patients who come to hospital for medical concerns related to their living with this illness for years.  Chemotherapy can be administered to patients on this unit.

 

CAN is a 21 bed unit supported by a team of healthcare professionals who provide individualized care which includes regular interaction with family members and loved ones. The teams’ goal is to assist each patient in testing, diagnosis and treatment options.

 

Our healthcare team consists of physicians with a generalist speciality, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, unit clerks, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, cleaning staff, volunteers and referrals to specialists for your specific medical diagnosis with expertise in Cancer Care and Medicine.
CAN/PCC is located on the 6th Floor of the Central Building.

 

Transitional Care Unit (TCU)

 

The TCU is an 18 bed open concept unit designed to meet the supportive care needs of non-acute patients who are transitioning to home or other supportive care facilities. Our team provides care, planning and recreation in order to support the patients and families during their stay.

 

Our goal is to maximize and maintain our patient’s abilities both cognitive and physical while they await their discharge to their residence or facility. Our Patient Flow Navigator, in conjunction with CCAC, works to provide information and options to best suit the needs of the patients and families to assist with a timely transition to the patients’ residence.
TCU is located on the 6th Floor of the Central Building.
