Southlake as an RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organization pre-designate

Excellence Every Time

In 2015, Southlake Regional Health Centre received a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) pre-designation through the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO).

About the Best Practice Spotlight Organization Program

Best Practice Spotlight Organizations (BPSOs) are healthcare and academic organizations selected by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) through a Request for Proposals process to implement and evaluate the RNAO's best practice guidelines. It is a dynamic partnership that focuses on making a positive impact on patient care though evidence-based practice.

Best Practice Guidelines are evidence and research informed practice guidelines that support best practice and quality care, and healthy safe care environment. There are currently 50 BPGs, both clinical and Healthy Work Environment. The development of BPGs is a MOHLTC funded initiative through the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).

Forty-seven guidelines have been developed to date, including ones focused on the use of restraints, preventing falls, wound care, and preventing childhood obesity. An additional 10 guidelines focus on a health work environment.

Each healthcare facility selects guidelines they feel will have the greatest impact on the health and well-being of their patients and clients. During the three-year pre-designate term, the organization will implement guidelines, identify ways to sustain best practices, and evaluate their impact on patient and organizational outcomes as well as develop staff as BPSO champions.

After the three-year term as a BPSO pre-designate, organizations are designated as Best Practice Spotlight Organizations and join over 200 sites already designated as in Canada and around the world. The pre-designation term for Southlake is 2015-2018. For more information on RNAO and BPSO, please go to http://rnao.ca/bpg/bpso

As an RNAO BPSO pre-designate, Southlake has committed to implementing RNAO 9 Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) and developing our staff as BPSO BPG Champions over the next 3 year period of pre-designation and in 2018 will become a full BPSO.

“Being a BPSO pre-designate is a commitment and investment in Our People to provide the best possible patient experience” stated Annette Jones, Vice President Clinical Experiences and Chief Nursing Officer.

The BPSO journey actively engages nurses and all members of the interprofessional team to collaborate in implementing evidenced based practice.
