Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) Program

Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) is a proven, effective treatment for clients with severe and often intractable mood disorders.

The ECT program at Southlake provides assessment and ECT treatment for clients who are either currently admitted to the in-patient unit, or are receiving out-patient services from one of our psychiatrists.

ECT is used both to improve and decrease depressive mood symptoms while in the acute phase of illness and also in maintaining recovery after the acute phase (Maintenance ECT).

Admission Criteria

Clients must:

  • have a psychiatric diagnosis according to the DSM-IV TR
  • currently be in treatment under the direction of a psychiatrist at Southlake
  • be medically stable enough to receive ECT treatment
