Prevention and Screening
Prevention & Screening

Research shows that approximately 50% of cancers can be prevented or detected early before becoming a serious health threat.

Your actions make a difference in your health and there are many steps you can take to help prevent cancer. These include:

  • not smoking
  • eating a healthy diet
  • regular exercise
  • reducing alcohol consumption
  • getting the HPV vaccine
  • practicing sun safety
  • reducing exposure to chemicals, and more.

For further information, visit the Canadian Cancer Society.

Screening can either find cancer before symptoms are noticed or abnormal growths before they become cancerous. There are more treatment options and a better chance of survival with early detection and routine screening. For this reason,Cancer Care Ontario has three organized screening programs:

These programs ensure patients receive timely reminders for their next screening visit, result letters, and if needed, fast follow-up. Learn about the recommended screening guidelines to see what screening you, your family, and friends should be getting.
