Smoking Cessation

Approximately 19% of Ontarians over the age of 12 are regular smokers. For those being treated for cancer, smoking can reduce the effectiveness of treatment and slow the healing process. Treatment side effects can also become more severe with continued smoking and can increase the risk of getting a second cancer. The good news is that the majority of smokers who receive treatment at Stronach Regional Cancer Centre are interested in quitting.

To help support patients to quit, healthcare providers will have a brief discussion with him/her about quitting smoking. Patients who are ready to take steps toward a quit attempt, will receive information and be connected to available smoking cessation services in the community. The support aligns with recommendations from Cancer Care Ontario and has been shown to increase the chance of quitting. Our goal is to support a patient on his/her journey toward living smoke-free and helping to get the most out of their treatment.
